Looking back on this title, it totally sounds like a cheesy sales pitch for a $2,000 self help program.
Well, lucky for you it’s not. What if I told you that you could change any aspect of your life for the better in just one easy step. Would you believe me? Well I’m here to tell you there is only ONE reason I am sitting in a jungle bungalow in Krabi, Thailand right now.
There is only ONE thing I’ve done that got me to this point, and it’s much easier than you might think.
Ok are you ready for this? I want you to have an open mind. Seriously, don’t laugh when you hear the answer. Hear me out.
Alright, here it goes:
Start a Blog.
Why Starting a Blog Can Help Improve Your Life
Yep, thats it. I don’t care what kind of change you hope to make in your life, I would argue that starting a blog is the absolute best way to start. I’ve routinely said, that if it weren’t for Location Rebel, I’d still be in Portland doing the exact same things as I was 6 months ago. And its true, I would be.
Don’t get me wrong, that one easy step is a hell of a lot of hard work. There are a lot of things that go along with starting a blog, but I’d say that none of them are particularly difficult.
The whole point of a blog is to connect with like-minded people. Once you start the blog you slowly begin integrating yourself in the communities and niches of your choice. Discussions on the blog migrate to Twitter, Facebook, email, Skype, and even personal meetings. A blog is simply a tool to help you meet people that you wouldn’t have otherwise connected with.
Need help getting going? This Step by Step Guide to Setting Up Your First Blog is all you need.
So how can this be applied to your life? Well, what do you want to do?
Maybe you want to lose 20 pounds in the next 3 months? Google weight loss blogs, start leaving comments on other blogs in the niche, while simultaneously starting one of your own. It can be as simple as a wordpress.com account with your name on it. At this point, it’s important to just have a place of your own where you can have discussions about what interests you.
Maybe you want to move to quit your job and move to Thailand? Ha, that’s almost cheating because it’s so easy. Start a blog, email me, and I’ll help you out in anyway I can. I can name a dozen other people without even trying that would also be more than willing to help.
Want to start a new career? Use a blog as a virtual resume of sorts and build yourself up. In a lot of ways I did this without even meaning to.
Dan over at the Tropical MBA apparently liked what I was doing, sent me an email, and I ended up with an internship in Thailand where I learned how to do online marketing – while having a crazy adventure in the process.
The point is, you never realize where the opportunities will come from, but the only way you will find out is by showing up. Starting a blog is the first step towards showing up.
Maybe right now you’re thinking you don’t like to write.
Well, lucky for you, there are many other blog formats to choose from. YouTube is blowing up right now, and is a great way to “blog” without writing.
Same goes for starting a podcast.
When I first wrote this post in 2010, Dan was at around 15 episodes of the Tropical MBA. Now he’s nearing 500.
It’s like a blog, but without the writing!
There are thousands of resources out there that can tell you exactly what to do to get started, whatever your medium is.
The important thing is to start.
As I mentioned in the video, I want to do whatever I can to help you change your life for the better. I don’t care what it is, I firmly believe starting a blog will help to get you there.

Bottom line is that we have one life to live. We’re given one chance. So why waste it on something you aren’t excited about? Start taking steps to doing the things you really want to be doing.
I’m excited about this.
I’m excited about the future.
Even 8 years later, I still see so much potential in doing this.
It took years to truly find the purpose of this site, as evidenced from some of our earliest posts.
But now I truly think it’s one of the best places on the internet to learn how to build a lifestyle business that lets you quit your job, and spend more time doing the stuff you love doing in life,
Oh and on a completely separate note, I was so successful down in Thailand that I was able to hire an assistant! He works for bananas and answers to the name of Mr. Giggles.
