“Oh my God, I can’t believe we’re doing this!!” – Jenna upon picking me up at 6am this morning.
“Oh. my. God. I can’t believe we’re doing this….” – what I thought to myself upon waking up at 5:55am…
And so it begins. We’re currently about an hour into our road trip to the #sxsw conference in Austin, Texas.
According to Google maps it is 2,235 miles and 37 hours from Eugene, Oregon where we left, which will in effect make this the longest road trip I’ve ever been on.
For better or worse…
Why we decided to drive as opposed to fly is a question that I’m not sure I’ll ever fully understand, but I think I thought it would be a good adventure?
That said, at least I’m in good company.
Traveling with me will be Mr. Ryan Martin (@ryanmartin07) of Follow Me Everywhere fame, and he also happens to be my one of my best buds. Within the first 30 minutes of the trip, it became very clear that he has no idea how to use Twitter, which should at least make for a few minutes of entertainment throughout the trip. I mean how can you not laugh at comments like this gem:
“What the hell is a hashtag?? I thought I was brilliant using the @ symbol!”.
Assuming I can get him to understand (and actually use) a hashtag you can follow along with his progress at hashtag #tweetvirgin.
UPDATE: and I quote, Jenna: “You can’t put spaces in your hashtag!!”
This may be harder than I thought.
Also on that note, I’d love to see him get up to 200 followers by the end of this trip. So if you’re interested in reading some awesome travel stories, be sure to check him out.
And then there is the other 1/3 of our caravan, Miss Jenna Forstrom. I’ve known Jenna for awhile, but have spent more time with her recently as we’ve realized much of what we do is very similar, she just, you know, does it on a bigger level than me.
Jenna is the Community Manager for Adaptu. If any of you have been following along on Baker’s roadtrip, or seen his giant Man vs. Debt RV on the road, you may have heard of her company. Essentially it’s a competitor for Mint and it looks poised to give them a run for their money.
Update: According to the Facebook invite I just got, there will be a RV/Adaptu meetup in Austin, check that out as well.
You can check out her tweets @bite4size. Once she hands over the wheel, you’ll probably also see a lot more updates of our progress at #sxsworbust. You see unlike Ryan, she actually knows how to use Twitter.
Anyway, we’ve got 36 hours until we arrive in Austin, and I’m curious to see how well my plans of “working” on the road are going to work out.
Computer? Check. Power source? Check Internet? Check. Well…until we hit another dead spot.
I’d like to try doing some live streaming via the Location180 account at Justin.TV. I still think that this is a pretty cool service, and if it works the way it’s intended to, the power of it could be tremendous. Essentially its Ustream but I can do it all live from my phone where ever I am. (Does Ustream have an app?) That said, if you have anything you want to hear us talk about, leave a comment, and I’ll try and make an update!
So all that said, who’s gonna be down in Austin this weekend?? If you are, I want to see you! I really don’t have much in the way of plans aside from being at the AONC meetup on Saturday night. So shoot me an email, tweet, comment whatever and let me know so I can make sure we get a chance to meet up.
On a completely separate and unrelated note, last night I got the chance to go see Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal play in Eugene. As someone who’s played tennis his whole life and never seen a professional match it was pretty cool. Oh, and Maria Sharapova showed up. So did John McEnroe. All and all, an excellent beginning to what will hopefully be an excellent week.
