Vlog 15: How to Quit Your Job

By Sean Ogle •  Updated: 03/17/16 •  2 min read

Every week, I get emails from people asking the same question: how do I quit my job?

It’s a complex one, to be sure, but I still think it’s really important to answer.

So, a while back I created a post called 13 Approaches to Quitting Your Job (Without Burning Bridges) and it has continued to be one of the most popular posts on the site.

But, I wanted to go even more in depth and create a video where I dig a bit more into the advice I would give someone on quitting their job.

The reality is, quitting your job can be really difficult. Emotions can be running high, people take things personally, and if you’re anything like me, you may feel a severe sense of obligation to your employer.

But assuming the time is right, quitting doesn’t have to be that hard. Sometimes, it all comes down to having the right plan.

When you know how to quit your job the right way, then you’re going to be able to leave the office with your head held high, references in tact, and maybe even a future client down the road. Yup, that last part is true, we’ve had a couple of LR members go back to their old employers and turn them into clients (for more money).

Good, keep reading.

In this week’s vlog post we look at two different components of leaving your job:

  1. What you need to do in order to prepare to leave
  2. 5 actual strategies for broaching the idea with your boss

If you’re not totally content with what you’re doing, this post is for you.

Have you gone and quit your job successfully? What are some of your own strategies and tips you’d recommend? Let us know in the comments!

How to quit your job without burning bridges? – But where’s the fun in that 😉

    I say:

    Burn those bridges! Haha

    Cheers,

    Hi Sean,

I think this was your best video to date! Loved the strategies, the sound bite names for each strategy and your delivery.

Quick question: What was the biggest mistake you made when you quit your job that made you want to curl up into a ball and die afterwards? (Other than mentioning Hawaii as your remote headquarters 😉 )

    Awesome stuff!

  3. I’m gearing up to quit my job in early 2017! I just need a little longer then I’m off to the Philippines to go full time for a year or two – then back to travel the US.

Full Time Internet Marketer status is coming down the line!

As for burning bridges? I try not to but sometimes jt by following your own dream, you have to.

  4. I don’t think quitting your job actually has to be hard, or even really is hard. It just seems hard. But once you actually muster up the courage and lay it on your boss – it’s just fine. They understand. People come and go and sometimes it’s time to move on. Assuming your boss is reasonable, I don’t think there has to be any bridge burning.

I like this, it reminds me when I finally quit my job. It didn’t really sink in until I hit the road. I actually recorded quitting my job on camera if you want to check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBrk3S94VmI
