You're Not Behind the Curve – The Curve Doesn't Exist

By Sean Ogle •  Updated: 09/15/11 •  3 min read

Have you ever not done something because you feel as though you’ve missed the curve?

Perhaps  you’ve thought about starting an ecommerce store, but feel like all of the profitable niches out there are taken. Maybe it’s something as simple as wanting to take up a sport, and you feel as though your now too old to do it.

I’ve got news for you.  The curve doesn’t exist.  In fact, it never did.

Regardless of what you’re doing you will always be one step behind the curve.  The curve is constantly changing and moving forward.  Therefore the curve is a figment of your imagination and a terrible thing in which to make decisions on.

I don’t care what you’re thinking about doing, it’s not too late.

Often times you’ll need to come up with a creative or innovative approach if you want to be successful, but that’s what you should be doing anyway; and you should never not do it because the curve was missed.

I’ve talked to numerous people who wanted to get into search engine optimization but didn’t after the panda algorithm changes.  You know what they said to me?  “Guess I’m about 2 years behind the curve on that one.”

False. Completely, entirely, ridiculously false.

Sure you might not be able to stuff keywords and write a couple articles to make millions from SEO anymore.  But SEO is still there, it’s just evolving.  If you wanted to start doing SEO now, I’d suggest you research how social media, and more importantly, social influence, are going to effect the industry over the next decade.

Oh! You just went from behind the curve to ahead of the curve – just like that. Well, you know, that’s what you would be doing, if the curve existed.

The point here is to start thinking outside the box.  People that use the curve as an excuse are people that are intellectually lazy.  They wanted to ride out someone else’s good idea, rather than coming up with one of their own. Guess what, there are a plethora of good ideas out there. I guarantee that you even have a couple, you just have to act.

The curve isn’t going anywhere. It’s going to stay right there about two steps in front of you.  You’ll never be able to see it, because while it may always be looming, it doesn’t exist.

Spend 20 minutes and think about every great idea you’ve had lately but didn’t act on because you feel like you missed the curve. Now, think out side the box. How can you go from behind it to ahead of it. Then go out there and do something. Create something. Be something.

The curve may sound like a great excuse for inaction, but you know what? I’m not buying it, and you shouldn’t either.
